Privacy Policy
This policy explains what information Poster collects, why we collect it, who we share it with and what you can do about it. It applies to the Poster app for Android and to this website.
1. Who we are
Poster is a social app for sharing moments at places and talking with the people there. In this policy, “Poster”, “we” and “us” mean the team that runs the app and this website at theposter.app. For anything about this policy or your data, write to support@theposter.app.
2. Information you give us
- Account details: your email address or phone number, and what is needed to sign you in. Sign-in is handled by Google Firebase Authentication, so we never see your password.
- Profile: display name, username, profile photo and anything else you add to your profile.
- Content: posts, comments, reactions, images you upload, reports you file, and the people you block or follow.
- Messages: direct messages you send to other people in the app.
- Support: whatever you send us when you ask for help.
3. Location information
Poster is built around places. If you allow location access, the app sends us your device's approximate or precise location so it can show content around you, put your posts on the map and remember where you last were. You can turn location access off in your device settings at any time; the parts of the app that depend on location then stop working.
When you publish a post, its location becomes part of that post: the coordinates and a readable place name are stored with it, and the audience you chose can see them. Think before posting where you live or where you are right now.
4. Information we collect automatically
- Device and app information: device model, operating system and app version, language.
- Technical logs: IP address, the requests you make, a request id and your user id. We need these to run and secure the service.
- A push notification token, so we can deliver notifications to your device.
- Crash reports and basic usage analytics (which screens are used, which errors happen), provided by Google Firebase. You can turn analytics off in the app's settings.
5. Why we use your information
- To provide the service: show posts around you, deliver messages and notifications.
- To keep people safe: moderation, handling reports, blocking, preventing spam and abuse.
- To fix and improve the app, and to understand which features are used.
- To comply with the law and to enforce our Terms of Use.
6. Who we share it with
We do not sell your personal data. We share it only with providers that run the service for us, and only as far as they need it:
- Google Firebase — sign-in, push notifications, analytics, crash reporting and remote configuration.
- Cloud object storage (Amazon S3, EU region) — the images you upload.
- Our hosting provider — the server and database that run Poster.
- OpenStreetMap Nominatim — turning coordinates into readable place names.
- Other users — only the content you choose to publish, and only to the audience you choose (public, your cohort, or an allowlist).
- Authorities — when the law requires it, or when it is necessary to protect someone's safety.
7. How long we keep it, and deleting your account
We keep your account and content while your account exists. You can delete your account in the app (Settings → Login and security → Delete account). Deletion removes your profile, posts, comments, messages and uploaded images from the live service. Copies can remain in backups and logs for a limited time, and we keep only what the law requires. Images that are no longer attached to anything are cleaned up automatically.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live, you can ask us to show you the data we hold about you, correct it, delete it or export it, and you can object to certain processing. You can also withdraw the permissions you granted (location, notifications, camera) in your device settings. Write to support@theposter.app and we will answer within the time the law gives us.
9. Children
Poster is not for children. You must be at least 13 years old, or older if the law where you live requires it, to use the app. If we learn that someone below that age has an account, we delete it.
10. Security
Your data travels over HTTPS, and access to the database is limited to the people and systems that need it. No service is perfectly secure, so choose a strong password, keep your device locked and tell us at support@theposter.app if you think someone else got into your account.
11. Where your data is processed
Our providers may process your data outside the country where you live, including in the European Union and the United States. Where the law requires it, such transfers rely on standard contractual clauses or an adequacy decision.
12. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy when the app changes. If a change is material, we will tell you in the app or on this page. The date at the top always shows the current version.
13. Contact
Questions about privacy, or a request about your data: support@theposter.app.
